Come to see what the heck’s Undertale about. Stay for extra damage to feelings.

This’ll be vague because Undertale is something special, and to spoil any part of this wonderful game is a heinous crime.

To say that Undertale’s unique is an understatement. This is a title so singular, that I honestly believe, there won’t ever be another one like it. It starts innocently enough. A human child climbs the mountain and accidentally falls underground into a mysterious cave… will they stay trapped forever, or will they escape?

The Humble Beginning

The intro. Original art style and sepia. Please, we need more games like this.

You will wonder, “what is this about?”, as the intro welcomes you with simple, pixelesque visuals and your ears are caressed with a taste of a soundtrack to come. Then you pass dark tunnel, as you take control of the Fallen Child, and meet an almost… infantile character. A talking flower.

Flowey the Flower. He’s your best friend.

A thought might cross your mind, that you’ve just launched a silly children’s game. What with “Flowey the Flower” teaching you how to fight, by throwing at you some friendliness pellets.

“In This World, It’s Kill or Be Killed”

And then, when Flowey hits you, the charade drops, as your new friend left you on the verge of death, poising to finish you off. If not for the intervention of the most motherly of characters I’ve ever witnessed, you would die right then and there.

Your Character — the Fallen Child

The Fallen Child, upon their arrival to Underground

In Undertale you guide a child of ambiguous gender, and it is highly encouraged to name them after yourself when the prompt shows up. The rest of the game will hit that much more home.

What Is This About?

So what do you do in this game? Simple, you try to find a way back home after your character accidentally fell underground. Navigate through some simple locations with style reminiscent of old arcade automats. There will be deadly traps, a scary skeleton, or two, that want to hunt you down, and monsters on your way that pose serious danger, if you don’t understand how they work.

More to It Than It Seems

Welcome to Snowdin.

Danger all around is only one perspective. As you wander the Underground, you learn that there’s much more to the whimsical world you just landed in.

Monsters are trapped here, too, behind a magical barrier that requires tremendous power to break through. It’s not that bad for them, as their fuzzy king tries their best to keep everyone safe and happy, but they long for the surface.

How Will You Find Your Way Home?

And you? You also want to go home, but how you’ll get there is your choice entirely. Whether you fight your way out or try to understand these creatures of pure magic, that’s your decision, but it will influence the narrative. And that last part is important.

Gameplay — The Art of Self Defense

Bullet Hell instead of some battle system? It works amazing, believe me.

In this game, you have two screens. One is an overworld, where you walk around, talk to others, listen to their jokes, and travel between areas… but if you stumble upon an enemy, off to battle screen with you!

Fight Like You Mean It

Welcome to one of the easiest bosses in game.

Here you’ll get to see the unique battle system. There’s a heart representing your SOUL that you control. Dodge enemy attacks that get progressively more tricky to avoid, wait for an opportunity, and choose your action wisely.

It’s like those old top-down shooters, only with more nerve-wracking action. Seriously, some enemies have downright cruel attack patterns. Attacking is simple – you just have to hit the rapidly-moving indicator as close to the middle as possible.

Acting is trickier, but I’ll leave you to figure that out on your own.

You killed the monster? Congrats, you get some EXP and money! Otherwise, it’s just a bit of cash.

Bosses and You

Your first boss is a training dummy. Undertale is like that. Watch out, or you’ll hurt his feelings.

One of the main appeals of Undertale — bosses that are absolutely mental to fight. Either you learn their pattern after multiple deaths, or you leave the game and never come back. They take iron will and sheer determination to win against.

Especially the secret one, since their patterns were explicitly created to make you suffer. To be fair, they have a good reason for that.

This Game Truly Reacts to Your Decisions

It might not seem like it, but every decision you make, however insignificant it might seem, has consequences. And I do not mean dialogue options.

Deeds, not words, decide the outcome of not only your interactions with others but also how everything ends. Defend yourself, or run away from monsters. Make some friends, or kill your enemies. Whatever you do, stay true to your cause.

Once you realize what is happening, Undertale presents insane replayability value. It will also realize that you are replaying it. Take my word for it, it’s incredible, and there’s some great humor hidden away.

Shyreen. She’ll sing you a song, you won’t forget…

Soundtrack That Critically Hits Your Feels

Or, the reason I can’t play this game anymore. I can’t write much about the story without spoiling the experience, but I will write my heart out about the music.

It’s… unbelievable. The Undertale has a soundtrack brimming with emotions, whether it’s nostalgia, excitement, sadness, or Hope and Dreams. It’s magnificent. It’s stupid and silly. It’s gut-wrenching and will wring out your feelings like a wet rag.

One time it will hit you with simplicity and frivolous fun. Then you wander into the waterfall, where its beauty can only be compared to an old music box that your grandparents left hidden in the attic. Then it’s like someone’s playing a joke on you, and it’s such a good one, you can’t help but smile.

It’s that longing for something that you can’t quite grasp in every note. It’s an eerie peace of mind that lets you get lost in thoughts for a minute. It’s a laugh translated into a song. It’s the essence of your most desperate plea poured into a silly game that defies description.

Download Undertale, finish it, and you will understand. Words will not do it justice.
